Moderating Effect of Social Support on the Relationship between Trauma Exposure and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder among Social Workers

Abstract
The relationship between trauma exposure and posttraumatic stress disorder(PTSD) are underidentified in social work field. This study examined the moderating role of social support on the relationship between trauma exposure and PTSD among social workers. A sample of 967 social workers were drawn from mental health agencies, welfare center for the disabled, community welfare center, elderly welfare center, child welfare center, social welfare officials. Collected data were analysed by moderated multiple regression and simple slope analysis. The findings of this study as follows: First, social workers reported ¡®academy and task related trauma¡¯, ¡®family related trauma¡¯, ¡®self related trauma¡¯, ¡®death experiences¡¯ as personal trauma and ¡®client violence¡¯, ¡®client loss¡¯, ¡®job related accident and failure¡¯, ¡®workplace bullying and co-worker conflict¡¯ as occupational trauma. Second, the results indicated that the incidences of full PTSD and subsyndromal PTSD in the subjects were 29.7% and 12.9%, respectively. Third, female, more younger age, shorter duration of trauma experience, more severe trauma experience, lowe social support were significantly related to the PTSD. Fourth, social support moderated between the family related trauma, client violence and PTSD. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study were discussed along with suggestions for future research.
